Visage is a new platform co-founded by Column Five aiming to reduce the friction to create beautiful charts and visualisations in an effective and consistent manner. Currently only available to enterprise customers for design work, the service is expected to launch to the public during this summer. It seems to gain traction as even Linkedin seems to be using it already.

What seems to set it apart is the ability to “brand” the graphics. “Branding” here means color scheme. This ensures consistency in the visuals which always helps the audience to understand the message.

The screenshots and descriptions certainly look nice and will help to increase the share of better charts against unloving Excel productions. However, the service seems more geared toward art directors who would like to reduce the friction to process data from spreadsheets to Illustrator. Finance guys like myself will occasionally use it but without automated data import/linking it disqualifies for scheduled reporting packages. For everyone else though Visage seems to offer a good balance between flexibility and automation that might be able to attract quite a market.
